It is also true that interpretations exist suggesting Cook's retirement occurred earlier than expected by some. However, the background behind the market reading this as a "strategic reset" rather than a "panic" lies in the stabilization structure of internal succession and the buffer mechanism of Cook remaining as Executive Chairman.

Apple has avoided the burden of its own fixed capital expenditures by entering partnership agreements with Google and OpenAI, outsourcing computing power and model training costs. This is the so-called "Asset-Light AI Strategy."

This strategy yields two contrasting perspectives. Critics point out that if Apple, lacking its own AI model, fails to break free from technological dependence on Google or OpenAI, it could face structural limits in both service quality and privacy control.

Indeed, Samsung's Galaxy AI is evaluated as leading in tangible AI features such as real-time call translation and generative photo editing through close integration with Google Gemini models. Conversely, proponents view it differently. While other Big Tech firms are under pressure on short-term profitability by pouring nearly 94% of their free cash flow into AI infrastructure, Apple maintains financial stability and flexibility based on approximately $112 billion in annual net income and $416 billion in annual revenue.

The battlefield chosen by the Ternus regime will not be cloud AI, but "On-device AI." The Edge AI strategy, which processes all AI calculations within the device through the M5 silicon's Neural Engine, can provide a powerful differentiator for privacy-first user demographics. Furthermore, if new form factors such as foldable iPhones, AI smart glasses, and camera-embedded AirPods are realized, AI will operate not as a software feature, but as an engine for creating hardware categories.

The competitive landscape does not move on a single axis. OpenAI has recruited dozens of hardware experts formerly from Apple and entered into a partnership with iPhone assembler Luxshare, directly jumping into the AI-dedicated hardware market.

OpenAI's first device, known to have its product design handled by Jony Ive, is expected to be released between late 2026 and early 2027.
