Why K-Ramen Captivated the World: The 2026 Global Ramen Market and the Explosive Growth of South Korean Exports

1. Global Ramen Market Size: As of 2026, the global instant ramen market has entered a structural growth phase. According to Fortune Business Insights, the global instant ramen market size in 2025 is estimated at $64.67 billion (approx. 95 trillion won).

1. Global Ramen Market Size: As of 2026

The global instant ramen market has entered a structural growth phase.

According to Fortune Business Insights, the global instant ramen market size in 2025 is estimated at $64.67 billion (approx. 95 trillion won). The market is projected to reach $98.46 billion by 2032, registering a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 6.19%.

Applying this growth rate, the market size as of 2026 is estimated to be growing to around $68.7 billion (approx. 100 trillion won) (calculated based on Fortune Business Insights projections).

Looking at market size by country, the concentration is distinct. As of 2025, China is by far the largest market at $21.98 billion, followed by Japan ($4.75 billion), India ($4.6 billion), the United States ($3.01 billion), Saudi Arabia ($410 million), the United Kingdom ($217 million), Germany ($112.2 million), and France ($35.68 million).

By format, packet ramen accounted for 68% of the total in 2025 to form the mainstream, while online retail channels are growing the fastest at a CAGR of 6.92%.

Asia is the absolute center. The Asia-Pacific region accounts for over 85% of the total market, while North America stands at $3.93 billion, the Middle East and Africa at $2.19 billion, and Europe at $2.03 billion.

2. Global Consumption Ranking: South Korea's Position

The World Instant Noodles Association (WINA) regularly publishes national consumption statistics, with the latest report based on 2024 data released in October 2025 serving as the current official data.

By Total Consumption — South Korea Ranks 8th

According to a report released by the World Instant Noodles Association (WINA) in October 2025, global ramen consumption in 2024 reached 123.07 billion servings, a 2.4% increase from the previous year and a record high. By country, the ranking was led by China and Hong Kong (43.8 billion servings), followed by Indonesia (14.37 billion), India (8.32 billion), Vietnam (8.14 billion), Japan (5.9 billion), the United States (5.15 billion), the Philippines (4.49 billion), South Korea (4.1 billion), Thailand (4.08 billion), and Nigeria (3 billion).

South Korea's total consumption ranking is 8th in the world. It is already an astonishing figure given that a country with a population of 51.75 million stands shoulder to shoulder with nations boasting populations of 1.4 billion.

By Per Capita Consumption — South Korea Ranks 2nd (World-Class Level)

An even more meaningful indicator than total volume is per capita consumption. As of 2024, South Korea's annual per capita ramen consumption reached approximately 79.2 servings, ranking 2nd in the world. Vietnam ranked 1st with 81 servings, followed by Thailand (57 servings), Nepal (54 servings), Indonesia (52 servings), Japan and Malaysia (47 servings each), Taiwan (40 servings), the Philippines (39 servings), and China and Hong Kong (31 servings).

This means South Koreans consume ramen on average once every 4 to 5 days. South Korea's total consumption has continued a steady upward trend from 3.79 billion servings in 2021 to 3.95 billion in 2022, and 4.1 billion in 2024.

3. South Korean Ramen Exports: All-Time High Record in 2025

An even more dramatic story unfolds in exports.

Annual Export Value Exceeds $1.5 Billion in 2025 — First Time in History

According to the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, ramen exports surpassed $1.5 billion for the first time in history for a single item in 2025, recording $1.52 billion in export performance.

The process was also dramatic. According to the Korea Customs Service, cumulative ramen exports from January to November 2025 reached $1.38176 billion (2.039 trillion won), already surpassing the previous year's annual performance ($1.24838 billion). With this, K-ramen has broken its record for the largest export value for 11 consecutive years since 2015.

December exports were also projected to increase by 40.1% compared to the same period last year, and cumulative exports up to November recorded $1.382 billion, a 21.4% increase year-on-year.

Quarterly and Semi-Annual Trends

According to import and export trade statistics from the Korea International Trade Association (KITA), ramen exports in the first half of 2025 (January–June) reached $731.72 million (approx. 1.0184 trillion won), a 23.9% increase compared to the same period last year. The first half alone ushered in the era of '1 trillion won in exports.'

In the first quarter of 2025 (January–March), ramen exports also rose 27.3% year-on-year to $344 million, with exports expanding comprehensively beyond existing major markets like China and the United States to ASEAN, the EU, CIS, and the GCC.

4. 10-Year Trend of Export Fluctuations

South Korean ramen exports have drawn an unbroken upward curve over the past 10 years.

Export value, which stood at a mere $210 million in 2014, jumped to an annual $1.24838 billion in 2024, and surpassed the $1.5 billion barrier for the first time in history in 2025 to record $1.52 billion. This represents more than a sevenfold growth in 10 years.

The growth momentum has actually steepened recently. In the first half of 2025 (January–June) alone, exports recorded $731.72 million, up 23.9% year-on-year, and annual figures are estimated to have grown by about 21% compared to the previous year. Given that record-high export values have been broken for 11 consecutive years since 2015, this confirms a structural growth rather than a temporary fad.

From $383.28 million in the first half of 2022 to $731.72 million in the first half of 2025, it has roughly doubled in 3 years. Compared to 10 years ago, it has grown more than sevenfold.

5. Export Landscape by Country: Where and How Much Is Sold

As of cumulative October 2024, South Korea's top 10 ramen export destinations and export values were led by China ($206.8 million), followed by the United States ($176.5 million), the Netherlands ($76.7 million), Japan ($51.8 million), the United Kingdom ($45 million), the Philippines ($43 million), Malaysia ($40.7 million), Australia ($38.7 million), Thailand ($34.8 million), and Taiwan ($28.1 million).

While China and the United States remain the two core markets, it is notable that the Netherlands rose to 3rd place. The Netherlands serves as the largest logistics hub in the EU, substantially including volumes redistributed across Europe.

Growth rates by market in 2025 are also noteworthy. Chinese exports surged 47.9% to $385.4 million, the U.S. grew 18.2% to $254.7 million, and growth in emerging markets such as the Middle East (GCC) and Central Asia (CIS) was prominent.

Growth rates across regions are also even. As of the first quarter of 2025, regions with high growth rates were led by the GCC (37.9%), the EU and the UK (34.1%), North America (21.7%), and CIS and Mongolia (15.7%), showing all-around expansion beyond Asia.

6. Performance by Company: The Twin Engines Led by Samyang and Nongshim

Samyang Foods: The Golden Age of Buldak

The leading protagonist of South Korean ramen exports in 2025 is Samyang Foods. Samyang Foods generates 80% of its total revenue overseas, and Buldak Bokkeummyeon is estimated to have surpassed 5 billion cumulative global sales.

Production capacity has also been significantly expanded. Samyang Foods completed the Miryang Plant No. 2 in June 2025, enabling the production of approximately 1.3 billion units of export-bound ramen in Miryang alone. Samyang Foods' expected Q2 revenue was projected at 542.6 billion won, up 27.9% year-on-year, with operating profit forecast to surge 43% to 127.9 billion won.

Nongshim: Shin Ramyun Tumba, Opening a New Front

'Shin Ramyun Tumba' was included in the '2025 Hit Products Best 30' announced by Japanese economic magazine Nikkei Trendy, confirming the influence of South Korean ramen in the competing Japanese market.

Nongshim broke ground on a dedicated export plant in Noksan, Busan, capable of producing 500 million packages of ramen annually in early 2025, targeting completion in the second half of 2026. Furthermore, ahead of Shin Ramyun's 40th anniversary, Nongshim is pouring efforts into marketing by selecting girl group aespa as its first global models.

Ottogi: Quiet Expansion

Ottogi's U.S. subsidiary 'Ottogi America' grew 13.2% year-on-year in 2025, posting 104.4 billion won in revenue. Ottogi plans to expand its ramen exports from the current 65 countries to 70 countries this year.

7. K-Ramen: The Core Engine of Total K-Food Exports

According to the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, provisional figures put 2025 K-Food+ exports at $13.62 billion. This is a 5.1% increase compared to the previous year, marking the highest performance since relevant statistics began compilation. The agricultural and food sector continued a 10-year consecutive growth streak since 2015, surpassing $100 million annually for the first time.

Among these, ramen's contribution is peerless. As of the first half of 2025, ramen exports rose 26.4% to $434.5 million, serving as the central axis of K-food exports in both scale and growth contribution compared to other items such as confectionery (11.4%), ice cream (18.0%), processed rice foods (9.4%), and beverages (4.5%).

8. Growth Background: Why Now, Why Korea

① Combination with Hallyu Content

Netflix dramas, K-pop idols' social media, and participatory content like the 'Buldak Bokkeummyeon Challenge' have turned global consumers into voluntary PR ambassadors. An industry insider forecasted, "The popularity of domestic ramen will continue through this year and next year due to the popularity of K-content and K-culture."

② Relaxation of Regulatory Barriers

In 2025, regulatory easing occurred consecutively, such as the EU's exemption of ethylene oxide (EO) test certificate submission obligations for South Korean ramen, and Indonesia's lifting of required testing and inspection report measures.

③ Expansion of Production Infrastructure

Supply capacity was substantially expanded through the completion of Samyang Foods' Miryang Plant No. 2 (June 2025) and the groundbreaking of Nongshim's Noksan dedicated export plant (early 2025). A structure where supply matches demand has been completed.

④ Localization Strategy

An industry official stated, "The box-office success of K-ramen is the result of a complex combination of product development tailored to local consumer tastes and thorough localization strategies." Examples include cheese-flavored ramen (Americas), halal-certified Buldak (Middle East), and Habanero Lime flavor (United States).

9. Risks and Challenges

U.S. Tariff Risk

The South Korean ramen export industry forecasts that even if U.S. tariff risks materialize, the impact will not be significant given the nature of food products rather than luxury items, but a strategy to increase local production share is necessary over the long term.

Specific Product Concentration Risk

An industry expert pointed out, "Ramen has already proven its competitiveness in the global market, but the current structure relies heavily on specific products. It is important to broaden the export base to various items such as confectionery, beverages, and processed rice foods."

10. Outlook for 2026

The year 2026 is highly likely to serve as a turning point where K-ramen transcends being a 'strong export item' and establishes itself as an independent mega-category in the global food market.

Surpassing $1.5 billion in annual exports in 2025 and breaking the record for highest performance for 11 consecutive years have already shown precursors of this. What is important is that this growth trend is not a mere one-off fad. This is because the expansion of Hallyu content, spicy-focused global consumption trends, increasing demand for convenience foods, the expansion of online distribution, and the advancement of localization strategies are operating simultaneously.

In particular, if the completion of Nongshim's Noksan dedicated export plant materializes in the second half of 2026, the K-ramen industry will face another qualitative transition in supply capacity.

In alignment with Samyang Foods' expansion of production capacity, a structure is being formed where major companies can more stably respond to increasing overseas demand. This does not simply mean "producing more." K-ramen is now evolving into an industry that proactively designs production, logistics, and marketing systems predicated on overseas market expansion, rather than reacting to global demand post-facto.

Variables naturally remain.

U.S. tariff issues, food regulations by country, exchange rate fluctuations, and dependence on specific hit products can shake the pace of growth at any time. However, looking at current trends, K-ramen has already expanded its market base beyond the China- and U.S.-centric export structure to Europe, the Middle East, Southeast Asia, and the CIS. Therefore, the core question for 2026 is closer to "how widely and deeply this growth is anchored into the industrial structure" rather than "whether growth will continue."

Ultimately, the outlook for K-ramen in 2026 is relatively clear.

Growth potential remains high, supply foundations are strengthening, and brand influence is expanding. K-ramen is now cementing its position not as a temporary fad, but as a core strategic item driving total K-food exports. The year 2026 will be the year when it is fully proven whether this status is a temporary box-office hit or long-term industrial competitiveness.
